Monday night’s match ended Manchester United 0 Newcastle United 2.
Ahead of each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives following the game.
An interesting night at Old Trafford as Eddie Howe’s side played their final action of 2024.
Plenty to talk about after this one…
On this occasion it is David Punton:
POSITIVES
Sweet revenge
Man Utd have always seemed to largely get the better of us over the years, so to go there and do that to them was a small bit of payback.
The win there in 2013 was a great day but this one just hit different.
For NUFC to ;eave Old Trafford so stunned and voiceless will live long in the memory.
There’s no love lost with them and on this occasion it’s the wee club from the North East that grabbed the headlines.
Total football
One of the most complete first half performances from Newcastle United away from home.
We were streets ahead of the Mancs.
Total control in midfield and razor sharp up front. Technically excellent football at the top level. This was a huge coaching triumph for Eddie Howe.
Perfect tens
Were there any Newcastle United players who had a bad game? I could wax lyrical all night and day about how everyone was.
The way that Bruno, Tonali and Joelinton were able to dominate the home side made for a great watch. The Red Devils were left chasing shadows.
The movement of the front three was too much for their static back line. We ran riot.
Man U were lucky they came off having lost just by two goals.
For Eddie Howe this was culmination of some very hard work getting his midfield to gel. Fair play, he’s made it work with Tonali at 6 and Bruno higher up. It keeps getting better and better.
NEGATIVES
(*I can’t really say much here!)
Suspended
Schar’s yellow card was silly and he takes a ban
Humiliation?
We could and should have humiliated them by going 5-0 up in that opening half and we may never get a better chance to do that.
Dropping off
We dropped off in the second half and gave them some chances, which Howe will want to tighten up.
