A new name emerges as a Manchester City target to bolster their midfield

Manchester City will need to sign another midfielder or two or possibly more during the summer transfer window. That is dependant on who departs the world champions this summer but Pep Guardiola’s side cannot afford to neglect that area of the pitch this summer. But who City target at this stage remains up in the air. Now a new report has named Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White as a potential Manchester City target. On closer inspection, that is a move that does make sense, but City would face competition to sign the England international.

Mark Brus has reported for CaughtOffside that Manchester City are among a host of clubs monitoring the situation surrounding Morgan Gibbs-White. Furthermore, Brus reports that Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham are also monitoring the Gibbs-White situation. Brus further reports that Nottingham Forest does not want to lose Gibbs-White in the summer. But if they receive a bid in the region of €60 million they could sanction the sale of the England international.

Morgan Gibbs-White could fit into Pep Guardiola’s squad, but you do sense he’d be more of a squad player rather than a regular starter.

Morgan Gibbs-White has shown at Nottingham Forest that he is a quality Premier League player. He is a key part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side and you could argue that he is Forest’s most important player. The England international dictates and controls the midfield for Forest. He has a wide range of passing and is tenacious in a challenge. We saw Gibbs-White’s range of passing last week as he set up Forest’s winner during their 1-nil win over City last weekend. But when you look at where Gibbs-White could potentially fit into Pep Guardiola’s squad you do sense he’d be more of a squad player rather than a regular starter.

Based on who will likely start in Manchester City’s ideal midfield next season you do feel that Rodri and Nico are almost certain starters. That would leave Phil Foden as a potential number 10. Plus the possibility of City signing another creative midfielder looms large. Based on that assumption, if Manchester City signed Gibbs-White, you do feel he’d be competing with Nico or providing cover for the Spanish midfielder.

There does appear to be merit to the idea of Manchester City pursuing a move for Morgan Gibbs-White. Another factor to consider is his homegrown status. Whether or not City can sign Gibbs-White is another story. But it is a transfer that makes sense although the England international may not be a needle mover so to speak, it could be a move City pursue out of necessity.
