Alisson Becker’s statement on his future forces Liverpool into an awkward situation. The Reds will have to be at their best to manage it.
Alisson Becker has made it perfectly clear: he wants to remain with Liverpool. The Brazilian reiterated that stance in an interview with the BBC this week.
"I am committed to this club 100% and that involves being part of the leadership group," said Alisson.
"We have a lot of young players, new players coming in, a completely new staff. When we changed, not everything was going wrong. The challenge for us was to keep the good things, pass these things to the staff and the players coming in, and embrace the good stuff that the new staff are bringing."
It's fantastic to hear, of course. Alisson is arguably the world's best goalkeeper - in our eyes, there's no question about it. But his insistence that he's committed to Liverpool does create a problem for the Reds.
And it's an awkward one.
Alisson wanting to stick around long-term isn't the news Caoimhin Kelleher wants to hear. He's been waiting for his turn - and he's been waiting for a long time now.
But he's not the only one with eyes firmly fixed on Liverpool's no.1 shirt. The Reds have just signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, with the Georgian expected to link up with the club next summer.
If Alisson is sticking around, it's reasonable to assume that neither of them will be first-choice goalkeeper at Liverpool for at least another couple of years. That will see Kelleher push even harder for a transfer and will see an even more awkward situation develop around Mamardashvili.
Do Liverpool loan him away year after year? Do they cash-in at some point, despite teams knowing they have to sell? When will they actually get to see any value from their £35m signing?
At the end of the day, it's a nice problem to have. But it's an awkward one to manage and it'll test Liverpool to their managerial limits.
