All signs are pointing towards a Douglas Luiz return to Manchester City | OneFootball

As the close of the transfer window draws nearer we are still waiting for Manchester City to sign a midfielder. It was their most pressing need to fill before the transfer window opened. As of now, they are still yet to sign one. Perhaps it’s a case of Manchester City’s main targets not being available this month. If that does prove to be the case then perhaps Douglas Luiz could return to Etihad to fill City’s most pressing need.

Today we have seen multiple reports suggesting that Manchester City could pursue a move for Douglas Luiz over the final days of the transfer window. Sam Lee has reported in the Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet article that Manchester City may look to bring in Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus. Furthermore, Lee adds that the option to sign Luiz on loan may give City the flexibility they need to bring in a midfielder now and pursue a move for their ideal midfield target or targets in the summer.

Sam Tighe has reported for ESPN that Atalanta midfielder Ederson and Douglas Luiz remain potential transfer targets for Manchester City. Danny Rust and Dean Jones have also reported for GIVEMESPORT that City could seek to sign both Andrea Cambiaso and Douglas Luiz from Juventus.

Signing Douglas Luiz may be the most viable option for Manchester City to sign a midfielder this month.

There is no doubt that Manchester City are in desperate need of another midfielder. Rodri’s injury has left a sizable void in Pep Guardiola’s squad. We have seen Guardiola use Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Rico Lewis in Rodri’s role since City’s midfield general went down with an ACL injury. All of those players have had their moments in midfield, and at times, they have all struggled to cover Rodri’s absence. That’s why Manchester City must sign another midfielder during the current transfer window. But it does appear that City’s preferred targets aren’t available this month. That’s where a move for Douglas Luiz does make sense.

The Brazilian midfielder could immediately step into Pep Guardiola’s squad and play a role. Luiz is a proven player in the Premier League which he displayed during his time at Aston Villa. His strong form for Unai Emery’s side earned him a move to Juventus last summer. Although his move to the Serie A giants hasn’t played out as expected Luiz is still a quality midfielder. If Juventus are willing to allow him to leave on loan during the current transfer window then Manchester City may have to seize that opportunity.

With multiple reports suggesting that Douglas Luiz remains a target for Manchester City, it does appear that he could return to the Etihad. Of course that is dependent on what Juventus decide to do with the Brazilian midfielder. But if they are willing to sanction a loan move for Luiz, you would expect City to move, especially if they can’t sign their primary midfield targets during the current transfer window.
