Real Madrid took a step towards progressing to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 after they secured a 3-2 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their knockout playoffs on Tuesday.
Goals from Kylian Mbappe, Brahim Diaz, and Jude Bellingham allowed Real Madrid to come away with an advantage from the Etihad Stadium heading into the second leg at the Bernabey next week.
With the victory over Pep Guardiola’s men, Real Madrid have reached a new landmark in the Champions League.
Indeed, following their comeback against Manchester City, the Spanish capital giants became the first to achieve 300 victories in the premier continental competition.
Under the guidance of manager Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid reached this new milestone, maintaining their lead in the win rankings ahead of Bayern Munich (241), Barcelona (209), Manchester United (161), and Juventus (157).
It is another in line of historic achievements for the Merengues in the European Cup. No other European club has played as many games (498) and has come through as many knockout stages in the competition.
No other club have played in as many finals or have as many titles to their name as Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, it was not only Real Madrid who reached a special landmark on Tuesday as manager Carlo Ancelotti also achieved a major milestone.
With the game against Manchester City, the Italian tactician became the manager to have coached the most games in the Champions League for Real Madrid.
Ancelotti has now overseen his 72nd European Cup game as Real Madrid coach in the win over Manchester City, eclipsing Miguel Munoz (71).
Of the 72 games he has been in charge, Ancelotti has won 51, with nine ending in draws and 12 in defeat – a record that makes him the Real Madrid coach with the most ever wins in the competition as well.
