The new year began well for Angers SCO on the pitch, but it’s been a different story behind the scenes.
Financially, times are tough for the Pays de la Loire-based club, who beat Stade Brestois 2-0 last Sunday, moving them up to 14th in the Ligue 1 table, a point above FC Nantes and the relegation play-off line.
That match against Brest occurred on January 5th, the date the team’s players usually get paid each month, except this time they didn’t get their entire wages.
According to L’Équipe, the Scoïstes players have only been paid 40% of their wages due to the club’s financial difficulties.
Reports indicate that the club’s sporting director, Laurent Boissier, told the team in the dressing room that they’d only receive their partial salary this month.
Club owner Saïd Chabane was overseas when the players were given this news. Still, his company, The Cosnelle Group, was expected to inject money into the Angers side at the beginning of January.
That money is instead expected to arrive between January 15-20. Cosnelle is blaming the collateral damage from the butchered TV rights deal for the lack of funds in the club’s account, but he adds that everyone from the administrative and medical staff has been paid.
On the other hand, commission payments to player agents have been frozen for now, but Chabane says they’ll be paid at the end of January.
Angers’ next league fixture is Sunday when they travel to Stade de la Mosson to face Montpellier HSC, who are at the bottom of Ligue 1.
