Liverpool are reportedly keen on bolstering their midfield with the addition of Frenkie de Jong, according to TEAMtalk. The Barcelona playmaker has emerged as a strong candidate for the Reds as they plan for the summer transfer window. However, financial hurdles remain a significant obstacle in making this move a reality.
The Dutch midfielder’s name has long been associated with top clubs, and his technical attributes make him a natural fit for Arne Slot’s Liverpool. De Jong’s ability to control the tempo of a game and his capacity to contribute defensively and offensively make him a prime target. As TEAMtalk noted, “Liverpool have been put on alert as Barca are ready to listen to offers worth around €35million (£29.1m / $36.5m) to let him go.”
This valuation is significantly lower than the £63m Barcelona previously demanded from Manchester United. Yet, the salary expectations of the 27-year-old could be a stumbling block. Liverpool are unwilling to match his current wages, leaving the ball firmly in De Jong’s court regarding any potential move.
De Jong’s salary demands have been a recurring issue during his tenure at Barcelona. While the Catalan giants are eager to offload him to free up their wage bill, his history as a “stern negotiator” could complicate negotiations with Liverpool. If the midfielder is unwilling to accept a significant pay cut, Liverpool may pivot to other options.
As TEAMtalk highlighted, “Liverpool hold firm interest in landing De Jong but not at the current salary figures he is asking for.” This pragmatism underscores Liverpool’s commitment to balancing financial sustainability with ambition.

Liverpool’s pursuit of De Jong forms part of a broader midfield strategy under Arne Slot. With uncertainties surrounding contract renewals for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah, the club must prepare for various scenarios. The Reds are actively evaluating alternative options for midfield reinforcement should De Jong prove unattainable.
Slot’s system, which emphasises structured possession and dynamic transitions, would benefit from De Jong’s profile. Yet, as the club continues to monitor his situation, it remains clear that Liverpool will not compromise their financial principles.
Frenkie de Jong’s potential arrival is both tantalising and pragmatic for Liverpool. At just €35million, the Barcelona maestro offers tremendous value compared to his previous valuation. However, his wage demands cast a shadow over the feasibility of the deal.
While fans would relish seeing De Jong orchestrate Liverpool’s midfield, the club’s cautious financial approach is understandable. The Reds have shown that they can attract top-tier talent while maintaining fiscal responsibility, a strategy that has served them well under Slot’s guidance.
Supporters will also be keeping a close eye on alternatives, with Liverpool’s recruitment team known for uncovering gems. Should De Jong decide to adjust his salary expectations, he could become a pivotal figure in Slot’s evolving Liverpool side. For now, patience and prudence seem to be the watchwords at Anfield.
