Arsenal sent a massive statement to Liverpool after hitting Manchester City for five at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners trail the Premier League leaders by six points, having played one more game, but their emphatic win against the reigning champions sent a warning to Arne Slot’s side – they won’t back down in the title race.

Arsenal went into the game as slight favourites, considering City’s wobbly performances in recent weeks, and the Gunners made sure they piled the pressure on the Cityzens from the first whistle.

It took just two minutes for Mikel Arteta’s side to establish their dominance as Martin Odegaard opened the scoring.

Erling Braut Haaland cancelled out his countryman’s opener early in the second period, but it only sparked a rout that no one saw coming as goals from Thomas Partey, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Kai Havertz, and Ethan Nwaneri sealed a jaw-dropping 5-1 win for the Gunners.

Arsenal were excellent across every department, but one player who caught the eye with his performance was Lewis-Skelly.

In the opening 45 minutes, the Hale End graduate had 21 touches, completed 100% of his passes (13/13), won all his duels (4/4), won possession four times, won two fouls and made two tackles.

He capped off a stunning performance with a 62nd-minute goal to give Arsenal a two-goal cushion, becoming the youngest player (18y, 129d) to score against City in the Premier League since Lee Cattermole in April 2006 (18y, 12d).

Lewis-Skelly’s performance was enough to clinch a spot in the Premier League Team of the Week alongside teammate Declan Rice, who also played a starring role in Arsenal’s thumping victory.

Arsenal needed him to step up, and he delivered with aplomb, bagging a brace of assists.

Rice also completed 38/43 passes, five final third entries, created four chances, won possession three times, and made two interceptions and two clearances.

Arteta will demand more of the same from his side as they head to St. James’ Park on Wednesday, hoping to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit and book a spot in the EFL Cup final for the first time in seven years.
