Arsenal have confirmed Champions League qualification for next season after a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the Emirates.
Mikel Arteta’s side ended a five-game winless run in all competitions with a hard-fought victory over third-placed Newcastle in North London.
The Gunners produced a flat performance during the opening 45 minutes and were reliant on David Raya’s heroics to keep them in the contest. The Spaniard made five saves in the opening 20 minutes alone, including a brilliant double-stop to deny Dan Burn’s header and Sven Botman’s follow-up.
Arsenal improved after half-time and their winner arrived in fine style. Declan Rice swept in a magnificent finish from the edge of the area in the decisive moment of the game.
The win ensures Champions League football will return to Arsenal next season. Speaking at full-time, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard said that big European nights are the occasions the Gunners ‘live for’.
“We can be proud of what we’ve done, especially in the Champions League, we had a great run there and some great experiences. We have to accept we haven’t been good enough in the league, but we have to take all experiences, good and bad, take them into next season and be better.
“Unbelievable [Champions League], those are the nights we live for. To play here at home with that support. Great game and hopefully we can have many moments like that next season. Unbelievable to feel that and the love from the fans.
“We want to thank the fans. We always feel the love, the support we have is amazing so thank you. We have to use all experiences from this season, to feel that pain of not winning and take it to next season and come back stronger and bring the club some trophies next season.”
