Arsenal take on Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday evening as they look to build on the impressive record they boast against the Cherries.
Both sides are expected to field strong sides for the tie with the Gunners looking to keep fit and fresh ahead of a crucial Champions League semi-final second leg clash at PSG and Bournemouth on the hunt for a European finish.
The history between these two clubs is very much a modern tale with only one meeting coming pre-21st century. Arsenal hold a strong upper hand in the head-to-head but Bournemouth have proven to be challenging opponents at times.
The two sides first met one another in the third round of 1987-88 League Cup. Bournemouth, then in the Second Division under the leadership of Harry Redknapp, fell victim to a crushing 3-0 defeat at Highbury with Kevin Richardson, Alan Smith and Michael Thomas on the scoresheet. The Gunners managed to reach the final of the competition but fell short, losing 3-2 to Luton Town.
Bournemouth were the victors in their latest meeting with Arsenal, securing a 2-0 win at the Vitality Stadium back in October. Ryan Christie scored the opener before Antoine Semenyo put the seal on victory from the penalty spot to condemn the 10-man Gunners to their first defeat of the season.
The most famous and iconic encounter between Arsenal and Bournemouth came just over two years ago when the former mounted a brilliant comeback to secure three points.
Leading the Premier League table at the time, the Gunners were in need of a win to keep themselves in control of the title race but the Cherries put a spanner in the works when they led 2-0 following an opener from Philip Billing inside one minute and a Marcos Senesi second-half header. Thomas Partey brought his side back in the game with a finish from close range before Ben White levelled matters with his first Arsenal goal. As the clock ticked into the seventh minute of stoppage time, Reiss Nelson picked the ball up on the edge of the box before unleashing a left-footed effort into the far corner to seal a brilliant victory.
