Arsenal must 'earn the right' to beat United - Arteta
Arsenal host Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup as both sides look to make much-needed progress in the cup competition.
Mikel Arteta’s men will be out to bounce back from the disappointment of their 2-0 loss to Newcastle in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, with growing unrest among some sections of the support after that result and some recent tepid attacking displays.
Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is looking to build on a good result in their 2-2 draw to Liverpool last weekend. The visitors are in a buoyant mood after that display, but the nature of their recent form means that they head into the match as underdogs, with the holders look to avoid going out of the competition at the first hurdle.
Manchester United have Diogo Dalot over on that side, with the Portuguese and right-sided counterpart Noussair Mazroui beginning to refine their roles on the edges of Ruben Amorim’s back five.

Gabriel Jesus has begun over on the right of Arsenal’s front three. Mikel Arteta has been assessing his options in that position as he looks to cover for the absence of Bukayo Saka, with Ethan Nwaneri’s injury a real shame. Let’s see how Jesus goes this afternoon.

A pretty ropey start to the game. Manchester United immediately lump long and straight out of play, affording David Raya a goal kick...which the Spaniard launches to no-one in particular. Let’s hope the remaining 89 minutes are rather better.

It’s another chilly one in north London, though ever so slightly warmer than yesterday, where the mercury barely rose into the positive numbers. A day for a couple of early sprints to get yourself going.

Righty ho. Doncaster have just dumped Hull out of the cup in a thrilling penalty shootout, while Tottenham appear to be closing in on the fourth round, too, despite a superb effort from non-league Tamworth to take them to extra time. Will it be Arsenal or Manchester United joining them in the hat?

A reminder that, largely due to the desires of a small coterie of Premier League clubs, there are NO REPLAYS in the third round of the FA Cup - this tie has to be decided today with extra time and penalties available if required.

Mikel Arteta has urged Arsenal supporters to stick with him to help land the club’s first trophy in five years.
A number of disgruntled fans headed for a premature exit at the Emirates Stadium during Arsenal’s midweek opening-leg defeat of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Newcastle.
The Gunners are still in the hunt for the Premier League – six points behind leaders Liverpool – and on course to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League.
They also topped the Premier League table for the last calendar year, but their 2-0 loss to the Magpies dealt a major blow in their pursuit of landing a trophy this season.
The Gunners welcome FA Cup holders Manchester United in a blockbuster third-round tie on Sunday.

Ruben Amorim was deflecting suggestions he was spending January in a search for reinforcements. “My players are always my favourites so I really love my players and want to keep my players, especially the talented ones,” said the Manchester United head coach. But there was a caveat, one inserted four times into three answers: “We will see”.
It was deployed once when Amorim was asked if he wanted Kobbie Mainoo to stay. The answer came in the affirmative, but with that proviso: we will see.
Because it is, as Amorim variously described it, a difficult moment, a hard moment and a special moment. Which, in turn, is less because of a Premier League table that shows United in 13th.
Or even, given they are going to Arsenal on Sunday, with their defence of the FA Cup Erik ten Hag won potentially ending at the first hurdle.
It is financially.
High wages, ageing players, and repeated injuries make United’s squad unappealing for other clubs in the market

Martin Odegaard has scored one goal this season, and it was about as inconsequential as they come: a penalty slotted away during the 5-2 thrashing of West Ham United in November. He has recorded a handful of assists across all competitions, but the goals-scored column is otherwise empty.
It is a drastic decline. Last season Odegaard scored eight times; he scored 15 in the campaign before that, topping Arsenal’s end-of-season charts alongside Gabriel Martinelli. At a time when there is scrutiny on Arsenal’s lack of a ruthless striker, underlined by the match-winning performance of Newcastle’s Alexander Isak at the Emirates this week, as well as a need for fresh impetus on the wing, Odegaard’s goals are needed now more than ever.
Odegaard is yet to score from open play this season and his drop-off in front of goal is a central part of Arsenal’s declining threat
