Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona remains uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract. If no extension is agreed upon by this summer, a transfer could be on the table.
Back in October, SPORT reported that several top clubs—including Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain—are closely monitoring his situation.
Despite De Jong’s desire to stay at Barcelona, PSG’s track record of signing players from the club makes them a potential destination. Meanwhile, Barcelona appears open to parting ways with the Dutch midfielder. According to Mundo Deportivo, the club isn’t prioritizing a renewal due to financial constraints and their inability to meet his wage demands.
A previous report from CaughtOffside revealed that Liverpool have begun internal discussions about their summer transfer targets, with De Jong among the names on their list. However, his salary could be a stumbling block.
Barcelona are open to selling him for around €35 million, but his high wages at the Nou Camp have previously deterred Liverpool and other clubs from making a move.

Amid the rumors regarding De Jong, Barcelona sporting director Deco spoke with Sport y TV3 and shared the latest regarding the midfielder’s future with the Catalan side.
“For me, Frenkie is a great footballer,” Deco said (h/t AS). “He himself feels frustrated for not having won as many titles at Barcelona as he thought. That means he wants to stay. We want players who want to win titles.”
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has made it clear that De Jong remains a key part of his plans, according to SPORT.
Despite being under contract until 2026, Barcelona has spent the past year trying to renegotiate and extend his deal. With no response from the midfielder’s camp, the club reportedly considered putting the 27-year-old up for sale.
However, Flick opposes that approach and is easing De Jong back into the team following a string of injuries. His support, combined with a return to the starting lineup, could play a crucial role in persuading De Jong to stay.
