On Wednesday evening, Bayern Munich faced Scottish giants Celtic in Glasgow for the first leg of their play-off tie. The winner of this two-legged tie will book a place in the round of 16.
For the clash in Glasgow, Vincent Kompany opted for a balanced line up; Neuer - Laimer, Upamecano, Dier, Guerreiro - Kimmich, Goretzka - Olise, Musiala, Sane - Kane.
In the first 30 seconds, former Bayern II winger Nicolas Kuhn found the back of the net, but Adam Idah was impeding Manuel Neuer’s view from an offside position.
After 13 minutes, Harry Kane found Michael Olise inside the box, who managed to wiggle his way past Aaron Trusty, before seeing his effort saved by Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel at his near post.
Half an hour in, Goretzka breached the Celtic defense with a first-time dinked ball to Sane, but he couldn’t quite make contact. Before Celtic could get it fully clear, a header from Kane was wonderfully saved by Schmeichel, though the goal would have been ruled out since the English forward was in offside position.
With two and a half minutes of the first half remaining, a corner found Kane at the far post, but he could only head it wide off the target. It was a slightly difficult chance, but he should have scored.
Just as stoppage time began, an Upamecano pass found Olise out wide. His compatriot cut inside before smashing a shot into the top corner. It was a fantastic goal from a player who has seamlessly adapted to life in Bayern.
Just under five minutes into the second half, Bayern doubled their lead. An inswinging corner from Kimmich fell to Kane at the far post and this time he made no mistake — with an acrobatic finish into the back of the net.
Around 10 minutes into the second period, there was a lengthy VAR check for a Celtic penalty, but after multiple replays, Upamecano was seen as having got the ball first. A reprieve for the visitors and a warning about what to expect in the final 30 minutes of the games.
After 65 minutes, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman replaced Sane and Olise. Since there is another big game on the weekend against Bayer Leverkusen, Kompany decided to make changes to keep players fresh.
With 12 minutes remaining, Hiroki Ito replaced Raphael Guerreiro to finally make his Bayern competitive debut. The hosts got themselves back in the game by scoring from a follow-up move from a set-piece. The late goal from Celtic had set the game up for a grand ending.
After 87 minutes, Thomas Muller replaced Jamal Musiala. Soon after, Manuel Neuer made a big save to deny Alastair Johnston and help Bayern preserve the lead.
Despite an anxious end to the game in a very hostile atmosphere, Bayern were able to hold on for an important 2-1 win, ahead of the second leg in Germany next week.
