Despite the general feeling towards Alphonso Davies extending his contract over the last two years, there was growing optimism at Bayern Munich that an agreement would be reached with the Canadian left-back.
Sky Sports in Germany, back in December reported that there was significant progress made over contract talks with Davies. The Bavarian club had made an offer until 2029, with a gross salary of €14-15 million- with bonuses in addition.
Unfortunately, as per the latest update from Sky Sports, the player's agent, Nick Huoseh, raised his demands during a meeting with Max Eberl this week - that not only surprised the club but angered them. As per Sky Sports, Davies' camp are now demanding a total package of 'well over' €20m gross - including a hefty signing fee.
Interestingly, they also report that Davies wants to stay at Bayern, and has said so in the dressing room several times. He wants to continue playing with Jamal Musiala, who wants his best friend (Davies) to extend his deal. Finally, the report states that the contract situation with Musiala is also having a bearing on the demands of Huoseh.
While Bayern remain in contention for the long-term future of Davies, Huoseh will speak to Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool. All four clubs have shown interest in signing Davies on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Sticky situation for Bayern. There is no doubt that Davies has surprised some with his performances this season, no doubt this is his best season since he broke through in 19/20. At the beginning of the season, there were questions about his place in the starting XI, given how Vincent Kompany inverts his full-backs, but he has adapted brilliantly.
Furthermore, out of possession he has been crucial. Bayern play a high octane style of play, with much of the game played in the opponent's half. This style leaves you vulnerable to counter attacks, but Davies has been superb at stopping them with his incredible recovery pace, allowing Bayern to sustain attacks.
Having said that, Bayern must be careful during negotiations with Davies. There is no player bigger than the club. They have made contract mistakes before, with the length and wages given to the likes of Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry. If the player does want to stay at the club that much, he will override his agent. Let's all hope something can be sorted as soon as possible.
