Brescia supporters are reportedly planning a series of protests against their owner and former patron of Leeds United Massimo Cellino after a controversy surrounding the club’s Serie B status and potential relegation erupted on Sunday.

Why Brescia are in a relegation controversy

On Sunday, it was confirmed that Brescia are at risk of being handed a -4 point deduction in Serie B due to irregularities surrounding the payment of staff in the month of February.

If Brescia are handed a -4 point deduction, they will drop from 15th place down to 18th, which will relegate them directly.

This scenario will also give Sampdoria a second chance at safety, as they will face Salernitana in the relegation play-out instead of being relegated directly, while Frosinone will avoid having to participate in the play-out all together.

The play-outs had originally been due to begin this week, but have since been suspended.

A hearing is currently scheduled for Thursday, and no official decisions are expected to be made before then.

There are set to be several complications, though, as Brescia have announced that they will launch an appeal, Salernitana have had their play-out match cancelled with a day’s notice, while Sampdoria, who assumed they were relegated until Sunday, have not prepared nor trained at all over the last week.

Meanwhile, Brescia owner Cellino, formerly of Leeds United and Cagliari, is under scrutiny from the supporters of his club, who are planning a series of protests on Monday night according to reports from Sky Sport Italia.

There will be an increased police presence outside the club’s headquarters and outside Cellino’s home, with a demonstration due to begin at around 19.00 BST (20.00 local time).
