Pundit and former head coach Fabio Capello believes that Inter ‘threw away’ the Serie A title during their 2-2 draw against Lazio on Sunday night, and has explained where things went wrong for Simone Inzaghi’s side in the penultimate round of 2024-25 fixtures.

Nine matches took place simultaneously on Sunday night. Inter were held level at 2-2 by Lazio in San Siro after two equalisers from Pedro, the second from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.

The Nerazzurri stalemate means that Napoli remain on top of the Serie A table with a one-point advantage with one match of the season left to play after their 0-0 draw away against Parma.

A win against Cagliari, who are already safe from relegation, will be enough for Napoli to win the title on the final day of the season.

Capello: ‘I didn’t expect Inter to throw away the title like that’

Writing in his La Gazzetta dello Sport column, Capello explained: “I never thought that an experienced team like Inter would throw away the title like that with one game to go in the championship. I really believe that it is done for Napoli.”

Capello believes that Inter made the same mistakes that they have made a couple of times this season when they have gone ahead.

“The Nerazzurri once again relaxed after taking the lead against Lazio. Especially after Bisseck’s goal at the end of the first half, they stopped playing for everything” he explained.

On the penalty decision that got Lazio level late in the second half, Capello added: “The penalty caused by a Bisseck handball allowed a Lazio side who are good at not giving up to get level for a second time.

“The last 10 minutes were phenomenal because both teams tried to win it, although I have to say that Inter came closer. The fact remains that, like I said before, Inzaghi’s men have relaxed too often, inexplicably.

“Inter dominated in the first half, they wanted to win, they wanted to score goals. This Inter didn’t show up in the second half, they played to waste time. They were less careful or quick, they fell asleep. And it’s not a question of a physical drop-off, because everyone was running like crazy after the 2-2. It’s a matter of the head, mentality.”

Capello suggests that the upcoming Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, and players not wanting to pick up an injury for it might be part of the reson behind Inter’s performance against Lazio.

“Unconsciously thinking about the Champions League final, which is just around the corner at this point, maybe the fear of a muscular injury has made the team pull its oars out of the boat. It’s too bad, because this current Napoli is not the same as the Napoli from a few months ago. But that’s all the more reason to give credit to Conte for having completed a feat that few had predicted at the start of the season.”
