Fabio Capello weighed in on today’s clash between Inter and Roma.
The veteran technician was interviewed ahead of the match by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Calhanoglu and Paredes, they are the great beauty of this challenge: they will mirror each other from afar and will be able to direct the progress of Inter-Roma with throws, changes of play and shots from distance. The best of the match will come from them and goal-scoring opportunities will blossom from their plays.”
“Both the Turk and the Argentine come to this face-to-face at the height of maturity, and both owe a lot to their coaches: Calha has become one of the best playmakers in the world thanks to the intuition of Inzaghi who moved him in front of the defense, Paredes seemed like a ghost of himself, then Ranieri touched him with his magic wand and brought him back to the very high levels of his golden days.”
“The midfield battle will revolve around their ideas, where the contribution of the other teammates in the department will be fundamental: Roma is banking on the muscles of Koné and the experience of Cristante, Inter on the quality of Barella and Frattesi, at the great opportunity to start against the club that would have wanted to hire him in January.”
“If I were Ranieri or Inzaghi, I would worry first of all about one aspect, and that is to limit the likes of Dimarco and Angelino. Because one thing is certain: when the two left-backs of Inter and Roma receive the ball in the attacking midfield and start towards the back, something always happens.”
“The Inter player is among the best around in his role: he makes assists repeatedly, creates danger even when he goes on his own and shoots and is a guarantee of absolute commitment because he never holds back. Without Bastoni and Mkhitaryan, suspended, his interlocutors today will change but I don’t see any problems on the horizon: Carlos Augusto is among the brightest in Inzaghi’s squad and will help him read the dynamism of Saelemaekers, Barella remains a professor even when he acts as a left midfielder.”
“Angelino, who with Ranieri has become a very effective full-back, is the ideal switch for a penalty area centre-forward like Dovbyk: Darmian has all the experience to face the Spaniard face to face, but a lot of energy will be needed. And Darmian comes from two demanding tests between Bologna’s outbursts and those of Leao and company in the Coppa Italia derby.”
“I expect an aggressive Inter side, who will try to break through immediately by exploiting the quality of the midfield and the incursions of Frattesi and Barella, and a more cautious Roma, also because challenging the Nerazzurri would mean exposing themselves to a risk that Ranieri will not take: Inter can be lethal in their quick exits with the ball.”
“Never before has the approach counted more: Roma is chasing Europe but has less to lose than Inter, who are in a very delicate limbo. On the one hand, the two defeats with Bologna and Milan, which have consumed a lot of mental energy, on the other, the double commitment of the championship and the Champions League in the space of three days. I am sure that Inzaghi has tried in every way to raise a wall in the minds of his players between today and Wednesday: now only Roma should count, also because, in my opinion, the Scudetto remains the most attainable objective. In Serie A, with 5 games to play, a mistake can be recovered; in the Champions League everything will be uphill.”
