Celtic 2-1 theRangers. A year ago today, Brendan Rodgers’ side reasserted their authority at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with what felt like a crucial victory in the context of the season for Celtic. December had been a challenging month given the turmoil of back-to-back defeats against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park and then Hearts at Celtic Park.

Philippe Clement’s revitalised Gers travelled to Glasgow’s East End 16 games unbeaten — however, like Rodgers famously outlined in his post-match presser, across his two spells as manager he has seen off a number of Ibrox bosses, and fast forward a year from his comments, Clement looks like he’ll he added to that long list. Paulo Bernardo rifled the ball into the roof of the net to open the scoring for Celtic.

Kyogo’s memorable strike reversing the ball into the top right-hand corner early on inside the second half is an all-time special derby goal. Leon Balogun was sent-off for denying a goalscoring opportunity after the Nigerian defender clumsily brought down Daizen Maeda.

Tavernier’s sensational free-kick gave the visitors a lifeline, but Celtic saw the game out. The Hoops played their bitter rivals five times last season, won four and drew once. Just like the victory at Ibrox earlier on in the season, it was a significant one for Rodgers.

Celtic 0-0 theRangers. A game of two-halves where Scott Sinclair passed up a number of exceptional opportunities to put Celtic ahead in the first 45. However, after the interval, Alfredo Morelos could have easily won it for theRangers. Craig Gordon pulled off two cracking saves, but Celtic offered up nothing in the second half which merited a victory.

This was the Hoops’ sixth draw of the 2017/2018 season as the six-in-a-row Scottish champions headed into the second half of the campaign well clear at the top of the table. But it was obvious from the performance levels and results were not of the same standard to the Invincible season.

Celtic 3-0 Dundee United. Possibly the only memorable period of the easily forgettable COVID season was these cluster of performances in December. A convincing 3-0 victory over Micky Mellon’s Dundee United made it six victories on the bounce in all competitions for Celtic which included a Scottish Cup final triumph over Hearts to secure the Quadruple Treble. Ismaila Soro and David Turnbull seemed to be building up a formidable partnership in the middle of the pitch.

It was Soro and Turnbull who scored in this rare routine encounter for Neil Lennon’s side. Christopher Jullien suffered a cruel injury as the Frenchman collided with the post in the second-half to save an almost certain goal which sadly pretty much ended his Celtic career. A minute’s silence was held prior to kick-off in memory of Jim McLean who had died a few days before Dundee United’s visit to Glasgow. A trip to Ibrox was up next for Celtic, and the team knew they had to win in order to keep any hopes of a title challenge alive.

Motherwell 1-1 Celtic. Darren Lee Smith’s 90+3 equaliser for the hosts was well deserved. Boruc kept Celtic in the contest with Gordon Strachan’s side in desperate need of the winter break. It was three draws in four SPL matches for Celtic, and this one should have really been a defeat.

Derek Riordan opened the scoring on his starting debut for the club. Following Bobo Balde breaking his leg against Dundee United at Celtic Park on Boxing Day saw the emergence of teenage defender Darren O’Dea who stepped in.
