Bertie Peacock scored the late Celtic winner against Rangers

23 September 1950, Celtic defeat Rangers in the first Glasgow Derby of the season 3-2 at Celtic Park. The game will be remembered for the games opening goal by Celtic’s Donald Weir. Weir bulleted the ball home with his head, but it was the link up play between Tully, McPhail, Peacock and Weir that made the goal unforgettable. All five goals in the game were scored 25 minutes between one another.

23 September 1964, Celtic draw 1-1 with Portuguese side Leixoes Matosinhos in the 1st round of the Inter City Fairs Cup. Celtic’s Stevie Chalmers was sent off resulting in Hoops chairman Robert Kelly declaring that was by far and away the worst decision he has ever seen in football. Bobby Murdoch scored Celtic’s equaliser on the 30 minute mark.

23/09/86 League Cup semi-final at Hampden, Celtic 2 Motherwell 2 AET. Celtic won 5-4 on penalties

38 years ago today, Celtic beat Motherwell on penalties in the Scottish League Cup semi-final following a 2-2 draw. The Steelmen fought back late on having been 2-0 down after goals from McClair and Aitken. It was the second time in the tournament the Hoops had to rely on penalties taking them through. Tommy Burns scored the winning penalty to seal a place in the final.

23 September 2017, Rangers 0-2 Celtic. The Hoops win the first derby clash between the two sides in the 2017/2018 season. In doing so, Brendan Rodgers side made it 57 unbeaten matches domestically. Who else but Tom Rogic scored the opening goal at Ibrox. Leigh Griffiths added a second to put the game out of sight.

23 September 2000, Celtic narrowly beat Dundee 1-0 thanks to Stilian Petrov. Speculation before the game had been all about Mark Burchill who completed a three-month loan deal to Birmingham City the day before. The game was fairly tedious but Celtic walked away with the all important three points.
