PSG have booked their spot in the 2024-25 Champions League final against Inter following a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the second leg of the semi-final on Wednesday night, which sealed a 3-1 aggregate win.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was the only Italian selected as a starter, while Riccardo Calafiori came on midway through the second half. Jorginho remained among the substitutes for the North Londoners.

Donnarumma showed what he was capable of less than four minutes in, polling out an instinctive, point-blank save to stop Gabriel Martinelli’s volley from six yards out after a troubling long-throw in from Thomas Partey.

Donnarumma pulled out an even more impressive save just a few moments later, again following an Arsenal long throw, which fell to Martin Odegaard on this occasion. The Norwegian’s well-struck effort from the edge of the area looked destined for the bottom corner before the big Italian pulled out a remarkable save with a massively obstructed view.

Former Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia went for the spectacular in the 18th minute, cutting in off the left flank in trademark fashion and almost found the top corner with his bending effort, but struck the post on the far side instead.

The deadlock was broken after 27 minutes: Vitinha’s free-kick delivery was headed out to the edge of the area by Thomas Partey, where Fabian Ruiz brought it down, took a very neat touch off his chest, before slamming a half-volley into the back of the net past a helpless David Raya.

That was the Spaniard’s first ever goal in the Champions League.

PSG’s advantage was almost doubled immediately afterwards when Kvaratskhelia squared to Bradley Barcola in the area, but the Frenchman was not quite able to apply the finishing touches, despite sending Myles Lewis-Skelly to the shops with his cut-back.

Donnarumma needed to be at his best again an hour in, getting a fingertip save to Bukayo Saka’s bending effort that was destined for the top corner.

While there were brief appeals for an Arsenal penalty immediately afterwards, it was PSG who were awarded an opportunity from the spot after VAR deemed that Lewis-Skelly had handballed Hakimi’s shot in the area.

Vitinha, however, was not able to convert past David Raya from 12 yards out.

It took Hakimi just a few minutes later to score PSG’s second of the night, playing a one-two with substitute Dembele before dispatching past Raya from 15 yards out.

Arsenal halved the deficit on the night through Saka with 15 minutes left to play after a series of attempted, but unsuccessful interventions from Marquinhos, Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, which allowed the England international to squeeze home from five yards out.

Saka had an opportunity to equalise the scores on the night when substitute Riccardo Calafiori played him through on goal, but the onrushing Donnarumma just about did enough to put him off, and the Arsenal star managed to slam over an empty net from five yards out.

That felt like the moment that settled the tie. Arsenal still needed two goals to take the tie into extra time with just over 10 minutes to go after that, and though they tried, the Gunners were unable to get any closer.

PSG will now go on to face Inter in the final of the Champions League on May 31.
