Chelsea are considering recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace amid the club’s defensive injury issues.

Wesley Fofana could be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign with a hamstring injury, while Benoit Badisahile will not return from his thigh problem until February at the earliest.

Enzo Maresca was forced into a centre-back pairing of 21-year-old Levi Colwill and 18-year-old Josh Acheampong for the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace at the weekend. The latter was making his full Premier League debut at Selhurst Park.

Chelsea are now understood to be considering their options. Among the solutions is recalling Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace.

It would mark an embarrassing u-turn from the Blues, who froze out the academy graduate in the summer. Chalobah was not permitted to travel on the club’s pre-season tour as Chelsea sought to usher him out of the exit door. He has since made 12 league appearances for Palace this season, scoring three goals.

Another option is a new signing and Chalobah’s current club teammate, Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, is a potential target. Guehi is another Chelsea academy product, having progressed through the ranks before his £18m move to the Eagles in 2021. He has since established himself as a senior England international.

Chelsea this week announced that Aaron Anselmino has been recalled from his loan spell at Boca Juniors. The teenager was signed in the summer before spending the first half of the campaign in Argentina. He will link up with the first-team squad to add defensive depth.
