Chelsea strengthen defence plans with Crystal Palace Star in their sights

Chelsea secured a much-needed 1-0 win over Everton at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of a first-half strike from Nicolas Jackson, finally ending his 2025 goal drought. While the forward grabbed the headlines, it was goalkeeper Robert Sánchez who arguably saved the day. His commanding presence and crucial second-half stops ensured Chelsea clinched all three points in what was far from a straightforward encounter.
Defender Trevoh Chalobah also shone, putting in a performance worthy of man-of-the-match honours. His resurgence highlights Chelsea’s somewhat erratic transfer dealings in recent seasons. Enzo Maresca notably defended the club’s decision to loan out Chalobah last summer before hastily recalling him in the winter.
Chelsea’s transfer missteps extend beyond Chalobah. Marc Guehi, now thriving at Crystal Palace, was once part of Chelsea’s promising academy. His sale is increasingly viewed as a miscalculation, with growing calls to bring the England international back to west London.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano posted an update on X yesterday, putting Chelsea firmly back in contention for Guehi’s signature. Romano reported: “Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle remain all keen on signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace as he’s been on their lists for months. There’s also a possibility Guehi goes on free transfer in 2026 if a deal can’t be agreed this summer.”

Crystal Palace will face a tough battle to retain their defensive linchpin amid such Premier League interest.
With Chalobah proving his worth and Guehi linked with a high-profile return, Chelsea’s summer business could yet reshape their defensive foundations. Securing Guehi would not only heal old wounds but also strengthen their backline for seasons to come.
It promises to be an intriguing few months ahead for Chelsea, Palace and Guehi alike.
