Liverpool’s decision to keep young midfield talent Jack McConnell at Anfield rather than sending him out on loan has raised eyebrows. In the latest episode of Monday Marker on Anfield Index, host Dave Davis broke down the situation, giving insight into why Arne Slot and his team have opted to keep McConnell within the squad.
With Liverpool’s midfield options looking packed, questions remain over where McConnell will get his minutes. Davis’ discussion on this topic offers a clear picture of what lies ahead for the young midfielder.
During the podcast, Dave Davis highlighted the sheer depth Liverpool currently have in midfield. With Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Harvey Elliott all competing for places, the competition is fierce.
Davis questioned how McConnell fits into this equation, stating:
“Where’s he get his minutes? Now, you’re gonna say Plymouth. Of course, I have no doubt he starts Plymouth.”
He referenced Liverpool’s upcoming FA Cup fixture against Plymouth Argyle as a potential opportunity for McConnell to feature. But beyond that? The pathway remains unclear.
There had been speculation that Jack McConnell might head out on loan to gain valuable experience, particularly given the success of Liverpool loanees in the Championship. However, Liverpool have decided to keep him in the squad for the remainder of the season.
Davis expressed some concerns over the lack of playing time for the midfielder, saying:
“If he’s not going to get minutes for Liverpool, he’s got to go out and get those minutes elsewhere — that is just my honest thinking.”
The debate over McConnell’s future extends beyond just his development. With Liverpool competing on multiple fronts, depth in midfield is crucial. The club may see him as a viable squad option should injuries or suspensions come into play.
Despite concerns over his playing time, McConnell has already gained first-team experience at Anfield, featuring in Champions League and Carabao Cup fixtures. Davis pointed this out, reminding listeners that:
“James McConnell has Carabao Cup winner’s medal. James McConnell has Champions League minutes.”
This highlights Liverpool’s faith in McConnell as a long-term prospect. The club clearly believes that his development is best served within the first-team environment rather than through a temporary move away.
However, Davis did raise the comparison with Tyler Morton, another young Liverpool midfielder, who has struggled for minutes and may have benefitted from a loan. He commented:
“If Tyler Morton hasn’t got a move by 11 o’clock tonight, I think he needs to look at switching his representatives.”
This underlines the dilemma facing young players at Liverpool: stay and fight for chances, or leave to play regularly?

With Arne Slot now steering the Liverpool project following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, the decision to keep McConnell could suggest future first-team involvement. Whether that means substitute appearances in the Premier League or extended minutes in cup competitions remains to be seen.
Davis’ final thought on the matter summed up the uncertainty:
“I’m just really struggling… I just don’t see where he gets his minutes.”
For McConnell, the next few months will be crucial. Whether he proves himself as a valuable squad player under Slot, or finds his opportunities limited, Liverpool’s decision to reject a loan move has ensured that his immediate future remains at Anfield.
Liverpool’s choice to keep Jack McConnell rather than sending him on loan is a bold move. While the club clearly values his talent, his game-time situation remains uncertain. With so much competition in midfield, fans will be watching closely to see whether McConnell breaks through or becomes a victim of squad depth.
As Davis put it, Liverpool’s midfield picture is crowded, but McConnell is still in the frame. Now, it’s up to him to make the most of whatever chances come his way.
