Milan secured three crucial points in the Saturday clash against Empoli, scoring three goals in the process. Given that it was a positive performance, there are some good key stats and facts to highlight.
Alvaro Morata and Tijjani Reijnders (X2) both got on the scoresheet in the goal fest at San Siro, while the defence conceded zero shots on target. In short, it was a strong performance by the team and Paulo Fonseca was understandably happy after the full-time whistle.
As said, since it was such a good game, there are several positives to discuss and highlight. We have thus collected the most interesting stats and facts below.
Taking a look at the overall stats from the game, it’s clear that Milan dominated the affair from start to finish. From possession to XG and especially shots on target, the Rossoneri were significantly better than Empoli and truly deserved to win big this time out.
The defensive display was especially nice to see, given the struggles in recent months, as scoring three goals while conceding zero (!) shots on target is very impressive. Whether Milan can continue on this path, however, is a different question.
The Dutchman bagged himself a lovely brace in the San Siro fog, first on the half-volley and then with a precise finish. As a result, he now has six goals and three assists to his name and that is already better than the entire 2023-24 season, in which he got four goals and four assists.
Milan have prepared the contract renewal and an agreement is ‘very close’, according to a report, though it won’t be announced until the end of the season. In any case, if Reijnders continues like this, the Rossoneri can dream of a top position in the standings.
While Milan have struggled defensively away from home, they have been very strong in this phase at San Siro. In fact, the clean sheet from last night means they have avoided conceding in at least five of their first seven league home games for the first time in 20 years.
The previous occasion, as highlighted by Opta after the game, included six clean sheets in the first seven home games, back in 2002-03. Hopefully, Milan can replicate this stability away from home as well.
It has been rather tough to find the back of the net against Empoli this season, though not for the Milanese clubs. Aside from the games against Milan and Inter, which both ended 3-0, the Castellani side have not conceded more than two goals in a single.
Furthermore, only once has Empoli conceded two goals in a single game this season, the 2-1 defeat against Lazio. In other words, a goal fest was not a given for Fonseca’s men and it was very nice to see the attack clicking.
