Durham and Leicester City win Women’s League Cup shoot-outs | OneFootball

Durham and Leicester City both picked up two points after penalty shoot-out victories in the Women’s League Cup group stage.

Group A: Newcastle United 1-6 Liverpool Group B: Durham 1-1 Sheffield United (Durham won shoot-out 4-3), Sunderland 1-3 Blackburn Rovers Group C: London City Lionesses 1-4 West Ham United, Portsmouth 0-4 Southampton Group D: Brighton & Hove Albion 0-0 Leicester City (Leicester won shoot-out 4-3), Bristol City 1-3 Birmingham City Group E: Crystal Palace 2-0 Charlton Athletic

Liverpool stormed to a 6-1 win away to Newcastle United, as they went second in Group A. Liverpool had the points sealed by the break with four goals, Zara Shaw rifling in the first from outside the box, Mia Enderby, Olivia Smith and Cornelia Kapocs. Enderby later added her second, Amy Andrews scored a consolation for Newcastle before Lianne Kiernan added a sixth for the visitors.

Durham banked a bonus points with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Sheffield United, with whom they had tied 1-1 in 90 minutes. Monique Robinson gave United the lead in the second half but Eleanor Ryan-Doyle soon levelled for the hosts. Anna King saved two penalties for the Wildcats and Becky Salicki converted the deciding one, as her side went top in Group B.

Blackburn leapfrogged Sunderland into second spot of Group B, after Maria Edwards struck twice in the last 25 minutes. Ellie Hack’s goal had Rovers ahead for 45 minutes until Katie Kitching equalised. Then four minutes later Edwards restored the advantage and sealed the win with her second late on.

West Ham made it two wins from two in Group C with a 4-1 result at London City Lionesses. Sofia Jakobsson levelled for the Lionesses in first-half added time, cancelling out Viviane Asseyi’s opener. Two goals in as many minutes from Manuela Pavi and Asseyi put the Hammers in control, Riko Ueki adding their fourth in added time.

Southampton won 3-0 at Portsmouth to get off the mark in Group C. Emma Thompson bagged a brace and Megan Collett the other as the Saints went in 3-0 up. Thompson went on to complete her hat-trick in stoppage time.

Brighton and Leicester City played out a goalless draw in the 90+ minutes, the Foxes taking a second point after Deanne Rose’s penalty saw them win the shoot-out. Leicester are now a point ahead of Albion in the Group D table.

Birmingham City were 3-1 winners at Bristol City to move above them into third place in Group D. Three goals in a five-minute first-half spell saw Lily Agg and Louanne Worsey put the Blues two up and Abi Harrison replying. Simone Magill netted before the break to regain the two-goal lead.

Crystal Palace first points in Group E came with a 2-0 victory over Charlton Athletic. Both goals came in the first 25 minutes, scored by Ashleigh Weerden and Mille Gejl.
