Manchester United are scouring the market – particularly the Bundesliga – in hopes of acquiring some prolific attacking talents this summer.

With Rasmus Hojlund enduring a stagnant season and the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee struggling in front of goal, reinforcements are imperative for Ruben Amorim if he has any chance of mounting a battle for the European places next term.

From INEOS’ point of view, they need players whose clinicality can seamlessly transition into the coach’s setup, while also being young enough that they can occupy the role for years to come. As such, they’ve been linked with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike in recent days.

Reds in the mix for Simons along with arch-rivals

Simons, 21, has recorded eight goals and five assists in 25 appearances across 2024/2025 after missing two months of the season through an ankle injury setback. It didn’t take long for him to find form again, and he inspired his side to a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund prior to the international break by scoring and assisting in the clash.

His contract with the German outfit runs until 2027, giving Leipzig the upper hand over any potential transfer negotiations that may come their way, as they have no reason to sell him.

Weighing in on the situation – including United’s reported interest in the Dutch international – Christian Falk told CaughtOffside: “It’s clear any offer needs to be over €50 million — €60m wouldn’t be enough, but if it gets to €70m, they can’t say no to Xavi if he wants to make the next step to the Premier League. Everyone knows that he’s going to make this step but it’s not clear if he makes the move this summer or the next.

“There has to be a club very concrete on him. Manchester City like him, but United were, in the past, always a concrete option. It’s not so easy with money at the moment at United of course, so we have to see if there’s a club around willing to pay €70m. Simons is playing well but he’s not playing at a world-class level at the moment, so we have to see.”
