Gary Neville says Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus was “everywhere except where you want him to be” against Brighton and believes the Gunners need to “fix” their attack if they are to catch Liverpool.
The striker has been in good form of late, scoring six goals in his last five games.
But after Arsenal’s draw with Brighton on Saturday, former Manchester United right-back says Jesus did not take up the right positions in the game.
“Jesus, I watched him again last night, I actually love Gabriel Jesus, but he is everywhere except where you want him,” he said on the Gary Neville Podcast.
“Havertz is a little bit the same, you want them really in that six-yard box.
“It is just a bit frustrating watching them at times because I think they have got something about them, the journey they are on with the manager, and they will be happy today that Liverpool have dropped points and they are still in it, but they are going to have to improve enormously, I think.”
The draw with Brighton was Arsenal’s seventh of the season in the league, with the Gunners sitting second and six points behind Liverpool having played a game more than the Reds.
And Neville says he has been disappointed with what he has seen from Mikel Arteta’s side.
“I thought Arsenal would get through the game but the problem is they just can’t seem to get that fluidity in the final third of the pitch,” Neville said.
“They were hanging on a little bit at the end when Brighton came back into the game. I’m disappointed a little bit by Arsenal at the end of the game with this feeling that what cost them was the penalty decision. What cost you was not going and grabbing a game by the scruff of the neck and seeing it out.
“I’ve got Arsenal to win the league because I thought they would grow into this second half of the season.
“Liverpool have got more electricity about them, more threat up front, and unless Arsenal fix that and get that sort of dealt with (they won’t catch Liverpool).
“Arsenal can win this league but they’ve got to deal with (that) in January whether it’s players coming back or something within the current players that they’ve got, or whether it’s actually signing one or two players.”
Neville, however, believes there is no chance that Arsenal sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle this month.
He said: “I saw something on Sky Sports News the other day about Isak for £150m, that’s never going to happen is it? Arsenal are not going to spend £150m on Alexander Isak in January. It’s just never going to happen.
“So how are they going to get a player that will make such a difference to them right now?”
