Inter Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu will still report for duty as usual every time his club is awarded a penalty kick.
The 30-year-old had been flawless from the spot since joining the Nerazzurri in 2021. He cemented himself as the club’s ultimate designated penalty-tick taker.
However, his golden run ended last Sunday when he failed to convert against Napoli. The result thus remained 1-1 until the final whistle.
Nevertheless, the Turkish star insists he won’t be hiding next time the Nerazzurri have a chance to score from the spot.
“I don’t run away from my responsibilities. If I miss another penalty, I will take be taking the next one,” said Calhanoglu in his interview with TV 8.5 via FcInterNews.
“Some might think I have an ego. It’s not about that. It’s just that I believe in myself.”
The midfielder also revealed he was close to joining Galatasaray when he was still an AC Milan player.
“I had the opportunity to return to Turkey when I was at Milan. But at that time there were the Galatasaray presidential elections and nothing came of it.
“I am currently an Inter player, with a contract running until 2027. I don’t know what will happen in the future, it would be wrong for me to say anything. I don’t want to give anyone false hopes [for Turkish fans].”
Calhanoglu also weighed in on his last two campaigns at Inter, which included some interesting events.
“When we lost the Champions League final it was a difficult moment for us. The following season, we became Italian champions by winning the second star.
“Now we are doing well, the next matches will be important for us.”
The Nerazzurri star also looked back at the thrilling 4-4 draw with Juventus last month. He said he had warned his teammates about his compatriot Kenan Yildiz who came off the bench to score twice.
“Before the match, I told the guys: ‘Don’t let Kenan Yildiz breathe’. They didn’t take this very seriously. Then it was him who turned the game around.”
