Defender Benjamin Pavard started on the right of Inter Milan’s back three yesterday.

The former Bayern Munich and Stuttgart defender was coming off the back of an outstanding performance against Feyenoord in midweek.

However, yesterday evening proved to be a much different story.

Benjamin Pavard had a lot of space to cover on the right flank yesterday.

Monza naturally had to sit back and defend for a lot of the first half as Inter looked to push them back.

Therefore, Pavard had a large area behind him that he had to protect.

However, that did not mean that Monza simply sat in their own half. They did look to be aggressive when they had the chance.

The pace of Brianzoli forwards Dany Mota and Keita Balde in particular caused Inter problems.

Pavard never looked comfortable dealing with counterattacking situations. And he misjudged by continually backing off Balde as the Senegalese scored Monza’s second goal.

Therefore, it was no great surprise to see Pavard come off as a substitute for Yann Bisseck as a substitute at halftime.
