Como coach Cesc Fabregas doesn’t feel responsible for disappointing the expectations of those who thought his side could ‘fight for the Champions League’, as he admitted his side have been ‘lacking quality’ in recent weeks but reminded everyone ‘there was nothing here’ five years ago.

The Lariani got their only two Serie A wins of the season in consecutive weeks in late September, but struggled before and after that moment, losing five of their following seven league fixtures, which left them just one point above the relegation zone last weekend.

Como’s latest 2-0 home loss to Fiorentina was also marked by some mumbling of discontent coming from the stands, although the crowd didn’t explicitly boo the players – however, that was enough to prompt Fabregas to remind everyone that his side have just returned to Serie A after a long absence.

Fabregas: not my problem if some thought we could ‘fight for Champions League’

“Some thought we could fight for the Champions League: that’s their problem,” the coach of Como told after the match, as quoted by TMW.

“We are Como, five years ago there was nothing here, and now we’re in Serie A.

“Recently, we’ve been lacking quality, or something else. We had a great chance to equalize, but De Gea made an incredible save.

On the other hand, we are always punished at the first opportunity. In the first half, we didn’t defend well, but the second half was much better: we dominated and put them under pressure. I remember three or four chances where, at the very least, we should have shot on goal.

We train a lot to improve our offensive quality. And we need to keep going down this path.”
