Bruno Fernandes has said Manchester United must make their performance at Liverpool the standard after a hard-fought point at Anfield.
Ruben Amorim’s side ended their four-game losing streak with a 2-2 draw against the Premier League leaders on Sunday.
After a goalless first half, Lisandro Martinez fired Manchester United ahead when he ventured forward and lashed a high finish past Alisson. Liverpool responded to that setback, with Cody Gakpo levelling just seven minutes later. The Dutchman skipped inside Matthijs de Ligt before firing a fantastic finish into the far corner.
Mohamed Salah’s penalty, awarded after a handball by De Ligt, looked to have turned the game around for Liverpool but United issued a late response. Amad Diallo swept in from Alejandro Garnacho’s cut-back to send the travelling fans wild behind the goal.
The draw sees United climb a place to 13th in what has been a turbulent campaign at Old Trafford. Speaking to Sky Sports at full-time, Fernandes said his side have deserved the criticism they have faced. However, he praised an improved performance him his side and said the challenge for United is to reach this standard in every game.
“We have been criticised and fairly. Our position in the table says it all, we have lost too many points. Even today we can’t be happy with a point. We need the points and we could’ve won the game at the end, but it’s a fair result. Both teams played good football.
“I’m pretty upset. If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the league, why can’t we do this everywhere? It frustrates me. Also, finally I did a proper performance. We said we need much more from ourselves to get more from this season.
“Being 2-1 [down] then scoring it’s good to get a point but we need more. Now we have an FA Cup tie at Arsenal and it is going to be very tough but we want to get to the final again.
“We know how tough it is to play against Liverpool. Today we put in a real effort to the game, playing with some passion and heart is what is going to give you something from the game. You have to put in effort and that’s why we took something from today.
“It can’t stop here, We have to bring this frustration to the next game to understand this has to be the level. If we can do it an Anfield, we have to do it everywhere.”
