Both teams had a forgettable 2025 with only two games left before the end of the season. The home side sacked Ralph Hasenhüttl after an eight-game winless run. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim were dragged to the relegation fight as Christian Ilzer isn't expected to be at the helm next season.

Daniel Bauer, who took over as an interim coach at Wolfsburg, made four changes from the loss at Dortmund in the Austrian coach's last match. Ilzer also had room for two changes from the starting XI of the exhilarating 4-4 draw in Borussia Mönchengladbach.

As it's the last game of the season in Volkswagen Arena, Wolfsburg bid farewell to departing players ahead of kickoff. The Algerian attacker Mohamed Amoura could join Kevin Behrens, Bartosz Białek, Bennit Bröger and Niklas Klinger in leaving the club this summer, and he once again proved his worth right at the start.

His speculative shot from a tight angle was deflected off Leo Østigård as Wolfsburg took the lead in the first minute. With only 18 seconds on the clock, the goal goes down as the fastest scored by the club in Bundesliga.

To their credit, Hoffenheim settled well despite conceding yet another early goal. They had the best chances of the game even before leveling the score ten minutes before the half-time break. Marius Bülter, who was dispossessed during Wolfsburg's strike, provided the assist to Pavel Kadeřábek's expert finish.

Despite their record-breaking start, Wolfsburg were lucky to go into the break 1-1 as Andrej Kramarić's goal was disallowed for offside. Accordingly, Bauer made two half-time substitutions in hopes of ending the bad streak. However, Hoffenheim still looked more likely to snatch the winner with Bazoumana Toure and Adam Hložek lively in particular.

However, Wolfsburg were in front again when Jonas Wind headed home Lovro Majer's corner-kick in the 83rd minute. This time around, Hoffenheim's equaliser arrived two minutes later. Hložek and Bülter combined well to score a crucial goal in Hoffenheim's bid for survival as the latter squeezed it home from a tight angle.

Hoffenheim will most likely avoid the relegation/promotion playoff as they extended their gap with Heidenheim to six points. 12th-placed Wolfsburg endured their worst home campaign to date with only 16 points gained in front of their fans.
