Ligue 1 club RC Lens are keen to sign Southampton winger Maxwel Cornet on loan.
Southampton are having a rather quiet January transfer window. On the contrary, they were on a huge spending spree in the summer.
To give an idea, the Saints signed Aaron Ramsdale, Ryan Fraser and Maxwel Cornet on the deadline day itself. Ramsdale has been great, Fraser has been decent but Cornet has been a fringe player at Southampton.
Furthermore, Ivan Juric also said that the club wants to cut short his loan in January.
While Cornet hasn't been impressive, he hasn't been the worst player either. Playing only four matches for Southampton shows that the Saints bought him only for his Premier League tag.
Now, Southampton are looking for ways to get him off their hands. The best solution was to convince West Ham to mutually terminate his loan early but that doesn't seem to be happening.
Especially not without covering Cornet's full wages for the entire season. But Southampton need not worry, they could be offered a different solution altogether.
According to a report from L'Equipe, French club RC Lens are discussing the idea of taking Cornet on a January loan.
Cornet hasn't had much success in the Premier League and thus, a move to Ligue 1 might be fruitful. Not to forget, Cornet made a name for himself at Ligue 1 club Lyon before arriving in the Premier League.
Thus, this deal is a win-win situation for all clubs involved. Lens would improve their attacking squad depth, as the report mentions and West Ham and Southampton will be more than happy with his departure.
On top of that, the Saints could free more squad space this month.
Recently, it was revealed that Ben Brereton Diaz is inclined towards joining Sheffield United on loan. Southampton could complete a transfer masterclass if they successfully negotiate these two deals.
