Back on the 23rd of November, we saw Guglielmo Vicario play on for an hour in a 4-0 win over Manchester City, despite hurting his ankle badly enough to require surgery. After the injury, Spurs were forced to turn to their number two goalkeeper, Fraser Forster.
At first, things didn't go too badly, with draws against Fulham and Rangers likely to have been losses if not for some top class shot stopping from the 36-year old. However, an absolute nightmare against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where he made two glaring errors in the space of ten minutes, made it clear that Spurs desperately needed a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window.
That they got, with Antonin Kinsky coming in from Slavia Prague. The goalkeeper made his debut just days later, and seriously impressed during the 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi final first leg.
Despite that top performance, fans will be delighted to hear that Guglielmo Vicario has announced on his social media that he has returned to training, a little over six weeks after the injury. On his Instagram account, the 28 year old said: "Being on the sideline and not be [ing] able to help my team mates has been hard. Happy to be back on the training pitch and looking forward to be [ing] back with the boys. Thank you for your support."
It is still unknown when we will see Vicario return to the pitch, though there had been talk that he was aiming for a return in February. Perhaps by then Kinsky will have really given Ange Postecoglu something to think about with his performances in between the sticks during that period.
Still, to use the old age cliche, it is a "good problem to have". With all due respect to Brandon Austin, who performed admirably in his one appearance against Newcastle United, there was a point where Ange had to choose from giving a player his debut weeks before his 26th birthday, or a 36 year old Fraser Forster. To choose between Vicario and Kinsky will be a welcome choice for Ange, no doubt about that.
It would be pretty typical Spurs to have good depth in the area of the pitch it is the least useful, but nevertheless something good to have. Let's hope we see Vicario available for selection as soon as it is possible.
