Argentina legend and Boca Juniors president Juan Roman Riquelme believes Aaron Anselmino has what it takes to reach the top.
The Blues agreed a deal to sign the 19-year-old defender from Boca in the summer in a deal worth £15m and he was immediately loaned back to the Argentine side for the season.
Anselmino is one of a number of signings the Blues have made from South America as they increasingly look to exploit that market to find the best talent the continent has to offer.
Anselmino was expected to complete the season at Boca and join up with the Blues in the summer, but Chelsea have taken the decision to recall the teenager.
The defender is expected to join up with Enzo Maresca’s squad at Cobham next week and start training with the group, whilst Chelsea decide what the next best step for his career is.
Competition for places in defence is fierce, and although Anselmino has impressed at Boca he will be competing with the likes of Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi.
Anselmino is set to join up with Maresca’s squad at Cobham next week.
A loan to a European club hasn’t been ruled out, although there’s currently no space to send him to sister club Strasbourg.
Anselmino is very much seen as a talent for the future and Argentina legend Riquelme believes the youngster has what it takes to reach the top.
“He has developed a lot. With the growth, the head that he has and the desire to learn that he shows, he is on his way to being a great footballer,” he told ESPN.

“He is going to be a player for the national team. He is going to compete with the centre-backs.”
Chelsea will be hoping Riquelme’s words come true, but it still feels like there’s a long way to go until Anselmino makes his Chelsea debut let alone establish himself as a regular in the first team.
