In Liverpool’s hard-fought 2-0 victory against Manchester City, Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a standout performance that underlined his importance to Arne Slot’s system. Speaking on the Anfield Index podcast, David Lynch highlighted Szoboszlai’s energy, tactical intelligence, and growing influence in Liverpool’s midfield.
From the first whistle, Szoboszlai was everywhere, embodying Liverpool’s high-energy approach. Lynch was full of praise for the midfielder’s contribution, describing him as “everywhere, absolutely everywhere in this game.” Szoboszlai’s relentless pressing and ability to cover ground disrupted City’s rhythm, with Lynch noting, “He was a major part of setting the tone, really aggressive and winning the ball.”
Defensively, Szoboszlai’s work ethic was unmatched. Lynch highlighted his ability to track back and regain possession when City tried to break through Liverpool’s lines. “Whenever City looked like they might play through, he was always back to get the right side of the ball and slow them down,” Lynch explained, showcasing Szoboszlai’s commitment to the team’s defensive shape.
Szoboszlai’s influence wasn’t limited to defensive contributions. Lynch emphasised the Hungarian international’s creativity, pointing to the chances he created and his willingness to take shots on goal. “He creates three or four chances yesterday and gets a few shots away, one of which tests the keeper,” Lynch observed.

This dual ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch makes Szoboszlai a critical component of Liverpool’s midfield. Lynch remarked on the balance Szoboszlai brings to the team: “He’s giving you everything now—both sides of the ball—which is exactly what you want from a number eight.”
Despite early criticism of Szoboszlai’s consistency, Lynch pointed out that the midfielder is starting to find his stride. “People have just gone a bit early on him this season,” Lynch said, adding that Szoboszlai’s recent performances have demonstrated his true quality. His display against City served as a reminder of why Liverpool brought him to Anfield, with Lynch describing it as a “brilliant all-around performance.”
As Szoboszlai continues to adapt to Liverpool’s system, Lynch is confident that there’s more to come from the Hungarian star. “These last few weeks, he has started to get even better,” Lynch remarked, predicting that Szoboszlai will play a pivotal role in Liverpool’s pursuit of success this season.
