The decision of Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim to drop Marcus Rashford from the squad against Manchester City in December was seen by his teammates as highly significant, according to The Athletic.
The future of the Red Devils academy graduate appears to lie away from the Old Trafford club as he did not feature in any of their last seven matches.
The application of Rashford in training and effort in matches have been questioned in recent months, and Man United players are on board with Amorim’s attempts to set a standard, even if it comes at the cost of losing the talent of the 27-year-old.
He has been constantly linked with a January transfer window departure, and it is widely believed he wants to leave as soon as possible as he is not in the plans of the Portuguese.
Amorim is taking no prisoners in his bid to get Man United firing on all cylinders again, and losing Rashford could be a much-needed sacrifice that must be made.
The Englishman is not the only big player that could leave the Theatre of Dreams club this month, with Alejandro Garnacho another star that has been linked with a potential departure.
The Argentine has started just three of the last ten games and Amorim appears willing to let him go.
Man United believe selling Garnacho will help boost their chances in the bid to comply with the Profit and Sustainability Rules of the Premier League, but their willingness to sell such a player that was once considered untouchable speaks volumes.
The Red Devils agree standards have been allowed to decline since the no-nonsense Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, and they are ready to take the tough decisions and back their new boss.
More ruthless transfer decisions are expected in the summer as a major squad overhaul is on the cards, and fans will hope that can help get the club back to the top of English and European football.
