Former Manchester City striker and club legend Sergio Aguero has provided his honest thoughts on the historic goal scored by himself against QPR in 2012.
The iconic Argentine striker established himself as one of Manchester City’s greatest-ever players over the course of a 10-season career in sky blue and white, winning numerous domestic honours during that spell.
Along with his remarkable haul of five Premier League titles won under the coaching of Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, and Pep Guardiola, Aguero also registered his status as Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer with 260 strikes to his name.
That outstanding career at the Etihad Stadium ultimately resulted in the club’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak finalising and commissioning a statue of the legendary forward outside of the Etihad Stadium, alongside teammates David Silva and Vincent Kompany.
But one moment in particular is spoken about more than any other, with Aguero widely remembered for his goal in the 93rd minute against Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the 2011/12 season, to win Manchester City their first-ever Premier League title.
Now speaking during a new interview with The Guardian’s Sid Lowe, Aguero has admitted that he ‘finds it hard’ to sometimes hear about his memorable goal against QPR being spoken of solely regarding himself.
“I have friends who go to (Manchester City) games and they send me pictures of it (his statue) and I think: ‘This is mad.’ That will always be there,” Aguero explained.
The former Argentina international continued, “With time I appreciated how important that goal was but I find it hard sometimes to hear people talk about it because I think: ‘Che, there are others on the team.’
“Look, if Mario Balotelli doesn’t play the pass. It’s the most important goal in my career and City’s most important. I know that. It was Kun Agüero, so OK: I’m happy, proud, that I scored it and it is for ever in the history of the club. But it was everyone.”
Manchester City ultimately found immense challenges in securing a direct replacement to Aguero immediately after his free transfer exit to FC Barcelona in the summer of 2021, but landed the perfect replacement in terms of goalscoring prowess 12 months later.
Txiki Begiristain and colleagues within the Etihad Stadium offices scoured the market for options in the summer of 2021, aiming to land the then-Tottenham striker Harry Kane, while a sensational swoop for Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus was also mooted.
It was Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund who ultimately came in to take on the task of replacing Manchester City’s greatest-ever striker, and in his first season at the club, the Norwegian broke a multitude of records and guided the side to a historic Treble.
