Hull City fan pundit Ryan Frankish has given his thoughts to FLW about Chris Hughton becoming the favourite for the Tigers hotseat.
Hull City continue to search for a managerial successor after parting company with coach Tim Walter last week.
The Tigers’ 2-0 defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday spelled the end of the road for the 49-year-old after just 18 games in charge, with the East Yorkshire outfit currently two points from safety in the bottom three after a 3-1 defeat away to Middlesbrough last weekend under interim manager Andy Dawson.
The former Stuttgart and Hamburg boss faced an uphill battle to deliver success at the MKM Stadium this summer after the significant departures of Jacob Greaves to Ipswich Town, winger Jaden Philogene back to Aston Villa, and the end of the loan spells to forward Fabio Carvalho and striker Liam Delap.
Hull didn’t win any of their opening six games under Walter but then had successive victories over Stoke, Cardiff and QPR to get the club moving in a positive direction.
But such form was short-lived as the Tigers were hammered 4-0 by Norwich City and then failed to win any of their next eight league outings.
The Hull Daily Mail have reported that owner Acun Ilicali is keen on making a swift appointment, with the club already conducting six interviews in their bid to find Walter’s replacement.
Now, it’s experienced manager Chris Hughton who has become the bookmakers’ favourite (at the time of writing) to take the hotseat at the MKM Stadium, as the club narrows down its final shortlist.
FLW’s Hull City fan pundit Ryan Frankish believes the appointment of Hughton would be underwhelming and has questioned how long it has been since the 65-year-old delivered success in the second tier.
Frankish told Football League World: “Chris Hughton also slips into the category of underwhelming, and it is only him and Alex Neil that fill up that category, so that says a little bit about what I think!
“His success in this league is now about 7/8 years old from when he was doing great jobs with teams, his last notable job in the Championship was being rock bottom of the table with Nottingham Forest.”
Frankish added: “He’s been plying his trade in international football which is great but you can’t compare the two, so I think we’re in a very dangerous position to be taking a punt on a manager that hasn’t managed in this division in a few years.
“I think we need someone who is fresh and is going to get down and dirty straight away, so Hughton wouldn’t be my pick.”
An appointment of Chris Hughton isn’t likely to get the Hull supporters’ hearts pulsating, with the former Brighton and Norwich boss waiting a while for his latest taste of success in management.
Hughton was relieved of his duties as Ghana manager at the start of the year, failing to guide the Black Stars out of the group stages at the 2023 African Cup of Nations, and left Nottingham Forest at the foot of the second tier table back in September 2021 in his last league job, registering only 14 wins from 52 games in charge.
It will be particularly frustrating news given the other candidates linked to the role, with the likes of Mark Robins having a proven track record of delivering success on the pitch in recent years in the division.
With Hughton’s managerial career evidently on a path of decline, the Tigers must look to a more reliable coach who has had recent success in the second tier if they are to claw their way out of the troubles they currently find themselves in.
