Inter short-circuited in the final minutes of the Supercoppa Italiana final against Milan not only due to mental lapses but also because they had an unusual defense and midfield after two of their stars, Hakan Calhanoglu and Stefan De Vrij, subbed off early due to injury.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Turk bowed out due to an adductor problem. He missed time with a similar problem earlier in the campaign, but it was on the other leg, so it’s not a relapse.
Instead, De Vrij left a little early due to a fairly similar injury. Simone Inzaghi explained.
“He had a flexor issue and couldn’t continue, so I subbed him off.”
Inter were fielding a ragtag backline formed by Yann Aurel Bisseck, Alessandro Bastoni, and Matteo Darmian while Milan completed their comeback. In addition, Marcus Thuram watched wasn’t fit enough to contribute.
The Nerazzurri are hopeful their star striker, Francesco Acerbi, and Benjamin Pavard will return from injury in time for the next match against Venezia, or at least relatively soon. De Vrij is dealing with something mild, while Calhanoglu will sit at least one game.
They have been adamant about not doing anything in January, but an experienced defender is starting to become a must since Acerbi no longer offers the right guarantees from a physical standpoint. They are in a good place in the Champions League, and their upcoming schedule isn’t too hard, but they shouldn’t play with fire.
