Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is behind only Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe and PSG’s Ousmane Dembele for goals scored in 2025.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. They note how the Argentine appears to be making up for lost time.

Inter captain Martinez has finally found something close to his very best form.

It took the 27-year-old until several months into the campaign to get here.

Early on in the season, Martinez struggled with a lack of freshness as he had to rush his preseason fitness preparations following the Copa America.

And then even after Martinez had put this behind him, something was not quite right. The Inter captain still struggled for goals, including missing quite a few good chances.

That means that Martinez’s goal tally stalled as the autumn turned to winter. He in fact went through a goal drought that lasted almost two months.

But now, Lautaro Martinez looks to really be making up for lost time.

The Inter captain snapped his goal drought in a 3-0 Serie A win away to Cagliari in the team’s final match of 2024.

That goal came as a massive relief for Martinez. And, as it turns out, it has set the tone for 2025.

In January, Martinez has found the back of the net six times already.

The Argentine has been decisive for Inter in Serie A and the Champions League. He well and truly confirmed that with his hattrick against Monaco on Wednesday.

Moreover, as Tuttosport notes, Martinez has surpassed Marcus Thuram in terms of goals scored across all competitions this season.

The Frenchman has scored fourteen goals so far this campaign.

Thuram’s excellent goalscoring form had been vital for Inter while Martinez was in a slump.

But now, Martinez has regained his role as Inter’s true driving force from his strike partner Thuram. His hattrick against Monaco has put him back in his familiar position as the team’s top scorer.

Martinez has led Inter for goals in each of the past three competitions.

And the Argentine now looks on course to do so again. Maybe even with similar overall numbers to the last few seasons, despite his very slow start.

And in all of Europe’s top five leagues, only two players have had more prolific Januaries than Martinez. These are Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele.

When Lautaro Martinez had a relatively disappointing Ballon d’Or finish last year there was a sense that his goal droughts were part of the reason why.

And now, the Argentine is very much trying to put all that in the past.
