Inter Milan will not be signing Alex Meret this summer, as the goalkeeper is on the verge of agreeing a new contract with Napoli.
This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews. They report that the 27-year-old will sign a new deal until the end of either June 2027 or June 2028.
Inter have been following the situation of Meret at Napoli closely.
The former Udinese keeper’s current contract with the Partenopei is set to expire at the end of next June.
Therefore, Meret has emerged as a potential free transfer opportunity.
Inter are certainly no stranger of taking advantage of such opportunities. That is the route via which all of Stefan de Vrij, Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Andre Onana, Marcus Thuram, Piotr Zielinski, and Mehdi Taremi arrived at the club.
Moreover, Inter are certainly thinking about their future in goal.
The Nerazzurri signed Josep Martinez from Genoa last summer. However, there are some doubts as to whether the Spaniard can be the long-term heir to the aging Yann Sommer.
Meret would certainly be an appealing possibility for Inter.
The 27-year-old is a full Italian international, and has been Napoli’s starting keeper for several seasons.
And considering his age and position, Meret could feasibly be a starter for another decade.
However, Napoli have been doing everything they can to keep hold of Meret.
The contract talks with the Italian international have been ongoing.
Inter have been following the situation. And the fact that as of yet the negotiations had continued to stall gave them some reason for hope.
However, reports Sky, there was a meeting today between Napoli and Meret’s representatives.
And according to Sky, that round of talks went very positively.
Napoli and Meret’s representatives are very close to a full agreement on an extension, reports Sky.
The broadcaster anticipates that the new deal for the Italian international will run until either the end of June 2027 or the end of June 2028.
Sky report that Meret will put pen to paper on a new deal in the near future.
