Inter Milan Punish Genoa For Solid But Conservative Performance In Tight Serie A Win

Inter Milan were able to punish Genoa for a display that was solid but ultimately too conservative in yesterday’s Serie A clash.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
It never seemed as though Genoa would make it easy for Inter Milan yesterday.
The Grifone had already managed a draw against the Nerazzurri. The two teams drew 2-2 in Liguria in their first match of the season.
Moreover, Genoa had also managed a draw by the same scoreline against Inter last season. They had been one of relatively few teams to take points off of Inter.
Therefore, the Nerazzurri will have expected a tough outing yesterday.
Genoa did certainly show the defensive solidity that Inter will have feared.
The Ligurians were organized and combative in midfield, and put their bodies on the line in their own penalty area.

That made it very tough for Inter to score. When Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez broke the deadlock in the second half, there hadn’t necessarily been a feeling that the goal was coming.
However, Genoa lacked the attacking threat they’ve had against Inter in recent matches.
Striker Andrea Pinamonti attempted to hold the ball up, but Francesco Acerbi got the better of him time and time again.
And beyond that, Genoa offered little. Their commitment to a stern defensive effort stopped them from taking any real risks going forward.
