Friday night saw the Dutch second tier’s regular season come to a close. Both FC Volendam and Excelsior were already promoted before the final matches as they make an immediate return to the Eredivisie. For FC Volendam, their success was built off the back of two veteran goal scorers in Henk Veerman and Robert Mühren. Together, the two combined for an impressive 44 of the sides 87 goals. Yet, the two also have a combined age of 69. How much can the side rely on these two going into the Eredivisie campaign next season?
For Veerman, he has really found his scoring touch late on in the second tier. The striker has now scored 26 goals in back to back seasons in the Eerste Divisie. In many ways, he has become the Dutch equivalent of German striker Simon Terodde. The now retired striker was a guaranteed 20 goals a season in the 2. Bundesliga for many seasons, but would struggle when stepping up to the top flight. Veerman’s last campaign in the Eredivisie, for FC Volendam, saw him score just four goals. Yet for ADO Den Haag he scored his career best 26 last year and has matched that this season. With a contract running until 2026, Volendam will certainly like to use his experience next season.
Yet for Veerman, coming to the end of his career, there is a decision to make. He could remain with the side, the one he started his career with. Or, he could find another team in the second vision and continue to enjoy the end of his career by scoring plenty of goals against second tier defences. It feels like the former is more likely than the latter at this stage.
