Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni reigns supreme for assists in the Champions League after creating the opener against Sparta Prague.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. highlight that the 25-year-old has more assists than any other defender in the competition since 2020.

Inter defender Bastoni assisted Lautaro Martinez for the decisive goal against Sparta Prague yesterday.

The Italian international did not exactly put it on a plate. Martinez had a lot of work to do to improbably squeeze the ball in at the near post from a tight angle.

But at the same time, the captain would never have had the chance without the quality of Bastoni’s delivery.

This is just part for the course for Bastoni at Inter, though.

Nominally a centre-back, the 25-year-old still has a lot of license to roam forward in Inter’s 3-5-2 formation.

And from that role, Bastoni has proven capable of opening up opposition defenses reliably with his left foot.

And since the start of the 2020-21 campaign, he has made five assists in the competition.

As the Gazzetta note, no other defender has managed that many.

Season after season, Bastoni has proven his consistent reliability as a creative outlet for Inter.

Meanwhile, the Gazzetta note, Bastoni’s performance was far from just a matter of one excellent pass to assist Martinez.

Bastoni completed the most passes of any player on the pitch with 117. He also had 146 touches of the ball, more than any other player.

The 25-year-old orchestrated Inter’s play all around.
