Manchester City have agreed on a transfer for rising midfield talent Jacob Wright, according to new reports this week.
The Premier League champions have largely been tied to rumours linking themselves with an incoming in the defensive midfield role, as Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff continue to battle on without Ballon d’Or winner Rodri this season.
Among those linked with Etihad Stadium transfers are Juventus’ Douglas Luiz and Atalanta’s Éderson, however the latest understanding sees Txiki Begiristain and his colleagues venturing into the Portuguese market, and specifically FC Porto’s Nico Gonzalez.
While it remains to be seen just far Manchester City progress in their talks over the 23-year-old Spaniard, there is now conversation back at the City Football Academy over exits from the same position.
That concerns the future of one of Pep Guardiola’s younger options in the defensive midfield role, and a name that has not had too much in the way of first-team opportunities, despite rave reviews from some within the club.
According to the information of transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Swansea City have agreed a deal to sign Manchester City’s highly-rated defensive midfield talent, Jacob Wright on a permanent deal.
It is reported that while Championship rivals Middlesbrough were also keen on the 19-year-old, it is the Welsh club who are now completing a £4 million package deal for the Manchester City Academy graduate.
Wright has been a consistent member of Manchester City’s first-team set-up for over 12 months and joined the club on their pre-season tour of the United States last summer before featuring on several occassions in substitute outings this campaign.
Some of Manchester City’s first-team stars have been outspoken with praise on the teenager, as Manuel Akanji said during an interview during the second-half of last season, “A lot of great young players training with us. Jacob Wright has been doing a really good job.
“So many coming up, not scared, just trying to do their thing. That’s what I like; show us what you can do. They give it all, the right mentality.”
Wright himself opened up on the opportunity to leave the club on a loan agreement last summer, before ultimately deciding to remain at Manchester City to be in and around Pep Guardiola’s senior squad during an interview with MailSport in October.
“There was obviously temptation (to leave on loan in the summer) – there always is going to be – but when Pep Guardiola and staff around him want you to stay and be around that first team there’s not much of a choice,” he explained.
He continued, “There’s no temptation any longer when you get information they want you to stay and be around because they see you as someone that could be around it. The temptation went out the window as soon as I heard that.”
