Orlando City SC has resigned a goalkeeper. But he’s not the one you first think about.

Goalkeeper Javier Otero has signed a contract with Orlando City SC through 2026, with options through 2028.

Supporters think of the netminding acrobatics of Pedro Gallese whenever they picture the Lions. Yet Otero has gotten the call in goal for Orlando. He has increasingly shown his talent and ability.

Otero has three Orlando City appearances. Two of those were starts. He has one clean sheet across all competitions after signing his First-Team contract in July 2023.

Those are good records for Orlando. Supporters see him in the wings as Gallese does his thing for the Lions. It gives them confidence. But he has played during some dramatic moments.

He came into a June 2024 match for Orlando that had turned into a perfect storm. Gallese was called up for international duty for Peru. Backup keeper Mason Stajduhar collided with New York City FC striker Malachi Jones.

Both players had to leave the game. The half ended with Otero in the net and the score 3-0 in NYC’s favor.

Even coming in cold, Otero stood firm as the Lions turned up their offense and defense. The match ended 4-2. His proficiency has increased since then.

He is a product of the Orlando City Academy. He joined from the U-17s in 2017, then moved up to Orlando city B before his 2023 First Team homegrown contract.

As a goalkeeper for Orlando B, he led MLS NEXT Pro with 100 saves in its inaugural season, transitioning from USL League One in 2022. He is just the second keeper from the Orlando City Academy to join the First Team.
