Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has joked he’ll hold a party if Manchester City are stripped of their Premier League titles because of financial breaches.

An independent commission’s ruling is expected in the first part of 2025, following a case between the Citizens and Premier League.

City have been accused of more than 115 breaches, which include failing to provide accurate financial information over a nine-year period. City have denied any wrongdoing.

If found guilty, City face the prospect of huge punishment from the Premier League. Among the outcomes could be a heavy fine, significant points deductions, and the stripping of previous titles.

Liverpool finished as runners-up to City in the Premier League in 2014, 2019, and 2022 and could retrospectively be awarded the titles. Klopp, who was in charge of the Reds for two of those campaigns, has said he will ‘buy the beer’ for a celebratory parade.

“We had this discussion when I left,” Klopp said. “I haven’t spent a lot of time in Mallorca because I am always flying around the place. But if it would happen, I told all the people who wanted to [come]: ‘Just book a flight to Mallorca. I will buy the beer!’ We’d have our own parade in my garden.”

“Oh God… what a headline! We will see. I didn’t follow (the details of the case) at all. It could be two months (away from a finding)? Wow.”

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is another who has joked he will celebrate title success if City are stripped. The now Fenerbahce boss said in October: “As you know, we won Europa League, we finished second in the Premier League.

“I think we still have a chance to win that league, maybe they punish Man City with points, we win that league. And then [United] have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal!”
