Enzo Maresca has spent the last couple of weeks insisting that his Chelsea team aren’t in a title race. But his opposite number at Liverpool, Arne Slot, said the opposite after his side’s win against Manchester City yesterday.

The Reds secured a huge lead at the top of the table by blowing away Man City, but of course their manager wasn’t willing to let anyone get comfortable. He noted that Chelsea and Arsenal were teams he considered good enough to go on a run like the one his team has had, and compete for the title with them:

“I saw Arsenal yesterday and I saw Chelsea today — they are all capable of getting the same winning streak as we have, so let’s not get carried away by one or two wins. It’s all about consistency until the end of the season, keeping the players fit, keeping them playing with this much energy.

Looking back, Chelsea’s game against Liverpool a few weeks ago was a superb chance to take some points off them, and the silly goals given away in that game will haunt us.

Chelsea still missing key ingredient for title win

Frankly we still have to side with Maresca at this stage – for all of the fantastic results we’re getting and for all that we’re ahead of schedule, it’s still a major ask to keep it up with a young team, especially one which still struggles to keep clean sheets.

Maybe we’ve just been scarred by the last few years, where we’ve looked incapable of stringing wins together for a month, let alone a season. But plain fact is that we’ve not won our games against the top teams so far, and unless that changes, we will not finish first.
