Liverpool came very close to signing Martin Zubimendi last summer, and it appears that they have now set their sights on another La Liga midfielder, although this would be a deal that is equally as difficult to pull off – but for different reasons.
Zubimendi strongly considered the move to Merseyside last summer, before ultimately deciding to stay with boyhood club Real Sociedad. Now, Anfield Watch has reported that the Premier League leaders have set their sights on Real Betis pivot Johnny Cardoso.
Cardoso has been a very good performer for Betis since joining from Internacional last January, and because of this, he has entered the thoughts of numerous clubs. One of those is Tottenham Hotspur, who can sign him for only €25m at the end of the season, as per a pre-agreed clause with Betis.
Liverpool would surely need to pay more to Betis, who will surely find it tough to hang on to Cardoso come the end of this summer’s transfer window. While a deal would be tough for The Reds, the will of the player, who would surely be keen on a move to Anfield, could make things easier.
